HDG vs Zinc Plated Fasteners: Key Differences & Selection Guide

2026-10-19

When sourcing fasteners for construction, machinery and outdoor projects, surface coating is critical for anti-corrosion performance. Hot-dip galvanized (HDG) and electro zinc plated are two widely used options, but many buyers are confused about their differences.

1. Coating Process

  • Hot-Dip Galvanized (HDG) Fasteners are fully immersed in molten zinc at around 450°C. A thick zinc-iron alloy layer forms on the steel surface. The coating thickness is normally 45–85 microns.
  • Electro Zinc Plated Zinc is deposited onto fastener surfaces via electrochemistry at room temperature. The coating is thin, about 5–15 microns, with a smooth and bright appearance.

2. Corrosion Resistance

HDG provides far stronger rust protection. It works well for coastal, outdoor, heavy rain and long-term exposed environments. Zinc plating offers moderate anti-rust ability. It is suitable for indoor, dry and general assembly scenarios.

3. Thread & Dimensional Impact

HDG creates a thick coating, which may slightly change thread fit. For precision threads, extra tapping is usually required. Electro zinc plating has minimal impact on thread size, ideal for high-precision screw and bolt assembly.

4. Cost & Appearance

HDG has a matte grey surface and higher cost. Zinc plated fasteners are shiny silver, cost-effective and widely used for general applications.

How to Choose

✅ Choose HDG: outdoor, marine, coastal, heavy-duty construction projects with long service life requirements. ✅ Choose Zinc Plated: indoor equipment, dry environment, precision assembly and budget-sensitive orders.
